It may be almost time for the various outrageous but just possibly
correct "string theories" to prove themselves or fall from grace as
cosmological flavour of the week (decade). But, maybe not.

String theories, of which there are a number, seek to reconcile
Quantum Mechanics and relativity.
So far they have been able to be proposed in many versions without any
of them being experimentally testable so one is usually as good as
another and all may be no good at all.

However, when the long awaited CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is
finally commissioned later this year (they hope) several spoil sports
(from Carnegie Mellon and Uof T) have proposed experiments they'd like
to see run that could show the theories are incorrect, at least in
their present form. If the tests do not fail the theories may still
not be true, but they'll be less likely to be false :-)

But, the price of oil will probably still go up regardless :-)
