This from ARocket list about high output current Cyclon Lead tin *
batteries

"SpeedUp's 'Laramie Rose' "is a rocket, and not a battle bot, as I
incorrectly opined off list yesterday to some of the BCC recipients of
this email. And Cylon batteries are indeed lead based as he noted. BUT
not yer usual lead acid, and in need of special charging patterns.

Cyclons use a lead-tin technology but need to be charged differently
from normal automotive lead acid batteries, basically at a constant
2.45 volts per cell, with a high current power source (but never
charge
them when they are hot). Cyclons are pretty ancient now, and were
among
the first batteries suitable for sustained high current uses. One of
our
older robots used monoblock ones, but they have flimsy tabs so we
quickly changed to Hawker genesis (~12V gel-cell with the same
chemistry) and which some teams are still using now. There are no end
of
people that have wrecked these batteries using normal lead-acid
chargers. About five or so years ago we switched to Nicads and saved a
pile of weight, but hawker batteries are quite cost competitive with
nicads for supplying lots of current, however even Hawkers suffer from
large drops in capacity at very high current drain (the equivalent
loss
in capacity in high performance nicads or A123 etc. is quite small)
Lead-tin batteries seem to have an approximately five year lifetime
from
manufacture where they can perform as intended, even if used
infrequently. Beware buying ones which have sat in storage for a long
time.

Many years back the Cyclon cells used to be popular for energising glow plugs in model engines.  Maybe they still are?
