I'm putting this in with an EE tag.

Utterly brilliant.
Much dearer than one might hope.

What we want is a revolving propeller clock or oscillating arm type that is
solar powered and uses sun position to deduce the time, as this does.

The truly insane could also measure sun angle at midday to auto detect
latitude :-)

Actually, Russell, there are no electronics involved. I think you got
caught by the same frame of mind that I was (when you hear digital, you
immediatly think electronics :) ).
See the bottom pic at:

But, I agree. Brilliant!

I realise that. That's why I specifically mentioned the EE tag. It ISN'T
electronic but it has the look and feel. I wanted people to know I knew but
not tell them too much in advance so they could share the same discovery
process. ;-) My first thought was that it WAS electronic but it rapidly
became evident that it wasn't. Them saying that it wasn't was the real
give-away :-)

Or month ... maybe it needs to just sit around for a year or so to learn
its environs and get really accurate ?
