I am learning PIC programming. Does anyone have any excess inventory of PIC chips they might want to sell. I want to build some things that use I2C or other methods of communication between 2 PICs., PWM for some 12 V. motors, R/C servo control and ADC to start with. I have a test board that can program and test 8, 14, 18, 28 and 40 pin dip packages. They have to be FLASH type chips. I would like to buy in quantities of more then one chip to keep the cost down on postage. Lease contact off list. Thank you very much John

Only if you are lucky enough to have regeistered before 2005 and registered with a company they respect, then you can still sample. Best regards, Mark Jeronimus

Yeah, that's not at all true. They just won't allow the use of free email services because too many people are/were creating accounts and ordering samples for the sake of reselling them on Ebay. Ever wonder why there are so many Ebay auctions selling only 3 chips at a time? Just use your email address from your ISP and you should not have any problems getting samples. I should also mention that I think Microchip did however cut off samples entirely to some countries. But you can *always* contact a local distributor to get samples. Not that they take up that much space. I have also heard that some people have alot of samples that they may wish to get rid of. Also most of the mail order houses tack on minimum order, handling fees, etc. The local sales rep for Microchip told me they are trying to cut down on FREE samples to non bussiness people. Secondly, if you live in the US, order from Digikey and you get free shipping with no handling charge on prepaid orders of $25 or more. Hard to beat. Let me put it this way - it's polite to give people enough information, that way you don't waste their time. Ebay, ebay, ebay. But seriously, where *are* you located? Doesn't make much sense to ship to the other side of the world. Do you have a standard email address from your ISP? If so, you won't have any issues getting samples from Microchip. Besides, it's not like you should really have use for more than a few uCs. One man can only prototype so fast, and if you get reasonably powerful chips, you could opt to reuse them. On 1/26/06, R. I. IIRC the S/H cost has been E 25 (+VAT) for every order I placed. My orders are in the E 500 ... E 2000 range, so I don't mind much, but they definitely don't seem to want small orders. Which of course suits me fine :) What I like is that the S/H is E 25, no matter how many packes they actually send, from different warehouses, and/or for backorders. And I don't know how they do it, but I get a Dutch invoice with Dutch VAT, and no hassle wth customs. Very convenient. Going more and more "off-pist", but... Another source that I've fpund having good Microchip prices in general, is Farnell. And they charges less in shipping. Still, I think buy.mc.com was some cheaper anyway. And, as Wouter pointed out, for, let's say 100+ of PICs, the MC shipping charges are OK. Jan-Erik.

When someone asked him where he was located (on-list) he asked why that mattered. A reasonable reply would be along the lines that it might matter what country he was in. Instead he got blasted. By several people, that up until that time I had a high opinion of. If the intent was to drive away a beginner, I would say that it probably succeeded. But as a beginner myself, I do not see what sin he committed. Everyone knows that you can order PIC chips from Digikey, or Mouser, or other places. But if you are a beginner, and on a low budget, you only want a few chips and whether they have been previously used or not doesn't matter. So to me, as a beginner on a low budget, it makes perfect sense to ask whether or not someone on the PIClist might have some lying around that they want to sell. Anyway, the impression that I got out of it was a few of the old-timers acting like bullies toward a beginner. Kind of sickening, in my opinion. Bill
