'[AVR:] news from the Atmel seminar; Cheap ATtiny11'

Went to the Atmel seminar today.  It wasn't quite as interesting as the
last one I attended (two years ago); perhaps too much was repetition.
They do claim to be working on USB AVRs with flash, as well as
ethernet,
but they aren't close enough for any details to be available.

The newer low-end chips (40 pins and less) will have a one-wire
debugging interface with functionality similar to the JTAG capability
in the current large (ATMEGA) chips.  That sounds somewhat nice.
You'll need a new "JTAG ICE Mark 2" (which interfaces to computer via
USB) to use it, though...

However, the AVR marketing critter claimed that we would be able to buy
ATTINY11 chips (Atmel's low-end 8 pin chip.  Analog comparator, 1 8bit
timer, 1K flash, no eeprom, no ram) at $0.25 each in any quantity.  I
guess this is some sort of preemptive effort against the new microchip
low end flash parts (pic12F508, pic10f.)  Perhaps I misunderstood, and
this was only for the duration of the seminar; I haven't found a vendor
publishing that price yet.  On the other hand, Digikey IS advertising
$0.54 each (1) to $0.37 each (100), which is still pretty cool.

Cheaper than Mchips 10f series? Last time I looked the AVR stuff was
overpriced. I think I will have to look again.

Thanks,

What's Atmels' allocation history been recently?  Anything scary?

There's about 4000 attiny11 in their various forms at digikey right now.

Lots of the bigger ones as well.

Does anyone know what kind of ISP support there is for these attiny chips?

That's somewhat reassuring, but how have they been for providing production
qtys lately.  They've been known to have problems in the not so distant
past.  Have things been better with them?

Hi Bill,

I was there at the seminar too. Were you told that the price was for
seminar only? Some time back, I checked on Arrow and they had those
for $0.47 and they mentioned a budgetary price of $0.25. I emailed the
online customer service about budgetary price but I did not get any
concrete answer. Later the $0.25 budgetary price was removed from the
web.

How about a group buy of Tiny11 at $0.25.?

Regards.

Atmel availability has looked pretty reasonable for the last 5 years or
so - IIRC, they opened a new fab in 1999 or 2000 that improved things a
lot, and later they bought/merged with Temic and might have acquired
some more production capability.  (Just before the bubble burst.  a bit
sad.)   The seminar included a list of their current facilities; it
lists 6 fabs in 5 countries. including one apparently dedicated to
CCDs.)
I might still think twice for very high volumes, though.  interesting
the way a reputation lingers ....
Digikey has claimed continuous stock of most of the major parts (every
time I've looked, anyway), and they've show up at a bunch of other
dealers, and on eBay  (I gather that the 2313 is used in some sort of
cable decoder thing. Lots of people selling 2313s on eBay.  Sigh.)

No, I did not get that impression.  I thought it was supposed to be a
fairly long-term thing.  I was just wondering whether it was "seminar
only" since I couldn't find any $0.25 parts from the usual dealers...
I also didn't see any money or tubes of chips changing hands...

Main reason for my comment is that a customer of mine was quoted 16-20 weeks on ATMegas a couple of
months ago, and they but a lot of Atmels. Don't know if the situation has improved at all since
then.

It sounds like we won't be having a seminar in Australia
this year according to the local rep. Pity! I had my fingernails
sharpened :-)) for the poor engineer who would come and say
that they really don't have any "ISSUES" (i.e. problems) with
Studio 4.x and the ICE200. It's driving me nuttier, if at all possible.

Ah, you too. It's none better with the ICE-50 either. IMHO, it's Studio.
Interestingly, I've been working a lot with the smaller devices lately, Tiny-26, 2343, and Tiny-11, in simulation, and had NONE of the problems I had simming M128 code, and large (full chip) T26 apps.

I know but Atmel cannot replicate my problem. I have tried another
ICE200 that the support engineer brought along and the same problem
occurs, so it is not the ICE. The fact that it works perfectly with
Studio 3.56 (it has another set of bugs of course) points the blame
to Studio 4.xx. I will write to them again as soon as I have abit of
time becuse I know exactly where the problem lies but of course I
don't have Studio's source file.

Me too. Skipping instruction with or without executing them in single step is a big one.
