''Free' ICD working'

I assembled the circuit, programmed the micro, and the ICD works
perfectly!

A few notes on the current schematic, though:
R21 should be 10K
R22 should be 1K

Everything else is according to the current ICD users guide on the
microchip website.

I did not use the boost converter section, leaving RC2 unconnected and
eliminating everything behind U3.  Instead I hooked +13v directly to the
point marked "+13V"

Upon power-up, the LED blinks.  When MPLAB connects to the ICD, the LED
becomes steady, and appears to remain steady for the remainder of the
session.  MPLAB has an option to check the voltage levels, and also to
perform a self-check.  Both indicated that everything was working well.

I worked through the tutorial.  This is -so- much easier than the usual
test, program, figure out what's wrong cycle.  Not only that, but it
programs -much- faster than the picstart plus.

At any rate, I think I'm going to make a pcb for it and box it.  It will
certainly make some things easier.

This seems to be because Picstart Plus is too dumb to ship blank
locations. Unfortunately ICD in programmer-only (non-debug) mode isn't
as useful as it could be - it always holds reset low, and of course
unplugging the RJ plug to release it means you lose ICD comms and have
to reconnect.
It would be nice if run/stop would toggle reset in non-debug mode. It
would also be good if the serial comms were a bit less stupid, i.e.
attempt auto-reconnect and use more sensible timeouts - if it doesn't
respond immediately it ain't going to respond 5/10 secs later is it?
These long timeouts are EXTREMELY annoying!

(assuming you mean skip instead of ship). After recently moving, I'm finally
pulling my hardware out of storage. I upgraded Andrew Pine's picp (and found
that it supports many, many new processors). Programming a 16f84 takes only a
fraction of the time it does in MPLAB because it skips the blank locations.

Oh, btw - picp is the Linux driver for Picstart+:

Can you share your schematic, PCB layout etc... at the
http://www.piclist.com/freeicd
page?

Actually, I found out last week that you can set the programming range on the
picstart plus.  It is much faster ( 15 seconds as opposed to 2 minutes (ie, too
short to do anything useful, too long to sit still))

But I can still watch it count.  It takes more time to program the PIC than it
needs to.  Perhaps the ICD only changes those locations that have changed since
last time.

I will have to wait to get back to you on that.  My wife went into labor today
with our first child, so I may be a bit busy for a little bit.

I'm hoping to get some work done on it while she and baby sleep, but you know
how that goes...

A few people have contacted me about the pc board for the 'free' ICD.  I am
currently using the majority of the circuit which the MPLAB-ICD is made of,
which is copyrighted by Advanced Transdata.  They sell the MPLAB-ICD (about $149
[us]) and another version which is more full-featured (about 10 dollars more).

Due to the circumstances I doubt I will be making a PCB board anytime soon.  As
things develop, I'll let everyone know.  If I make a pcb, I'll plan a run of
10-20.  Email me if you want me to contact you at that time.

Sorry if I missed a bit on this thread but is there anything going on with
your 'Free' ICD (apart from http://www.piclist.com/freeicd )?
You have mentioned some modifications (removing the charge pump...)
Can you specify what exactly you have changed in original circuit?

Thanks in advance!

I have sent a GIF of the modification to you off the list.
