Common Ground? How to Wire Up LCD? (Quick, simple question)

I'm trying to wire up the following LCD to my parallel port:
http://serdisplib.sourceforge.net/ser/pcf8511.html
The diagram they have provided here:
serdisplib.sourceforge.net/ser/images/n6310_circuit_swreset.png
shows that pins 3 and 8 go to ground. Also, many of the parallel port
pins go to ground.
1. What is the purpose of that capacitor there? I mean, I've heard of
decoupling capacitors that smooth out power supply but this doesn't
look like it's placed that way. What is it for?
2. What does "GND" really mean? I know that I have to use two
batteries to power my LCD. I hook up pin 7 to the ( + ) and pins 3 and
8 to ( - ) with the capacitor in between for pin 8. Where do I connect
the parallel port pins labeled "GND" on that diagram to? Do I hook
them up to the ( - ) on the battery?
