When I talk to them, they insist that this NEVER causes problems with the cells.

The cell makers tell me they'd rather not be in the same room with a cell that has had a failed vent.  From what I've seen of my lovely Chinese cells, I'm inclined to go with the cell guys, and avoid close company with a pressurized steel can full of rocket fuel and strong alkaline.
