Hi John. The simplest way would be to put the PIC to SLEEP
and use INT0 to wake it up
> How long would it run on batteries ?
Power-down (SLEEP) current should be around 400uA (I think)
An average 1.5V AA alkaline would be rated at about 800mAh,
which should give 800mAh/0.400mA = 2,000 hours. A PIC that
can run at lower voltages would keep going for some time more
> Is there any pic with PDIP that can run longer ?
New nanoWatt part have significantly lower SLEEP current. As
low as a few nA, about 1/40,000th that of the F84. This would
give you 800,000,000nAh/10nA = 80,000,000 hours (batteries
would start running out sometime around 11,000AD). The 16F88
is 0.3uA
Reduce operating current when out of SLEEP by having a low
frequency and/or Vdd
